southern Ontario Green Lacewings
Chrysopa nigricornis Large (20 mm long). Overall a pale species; head almost white. Tiny dark, raised spot above mouth area on each side of face. Small, faint dark spot on each side of neck, behind eyes. Base half of antenna segments usually dark, but not always.
Goldeneye Chrysopa oculata Face has red square around each antenna base. 2 red lines on top of head. Whiskers (palpi) black and white striped. Thorax has black dots, randomly placed (not in a row).
Chrysopa quadripunctata Face light with red-orange spot between eye and mouth area, faint red-orange spot behind eye and a series of 3 red-orange spots along each side of neck. Some red-orange spots also on abdomen. Found around oak trees.
Chrysoperla carnea – plorabunda No marks to a black mark between eye and mouth area, and a whitish stripe down middle of body from head to abdomen tip. May turn reddish in spring and fall, if associated with deciduous trees and shrubs.
